Engage in conversation with others about a life-affirming future.

Conversations about a life-affirming future don't always come easy — people bring different views, values, and assumptions.

Below you'll find some resources that offer guidance for navigating these conversations, along with some opportunities to connect with others and practice engaging productively about these ideas.

Talking about climate change, especially beyond the green bubble, is hard. That’s why we’ve produced an evidence-based, practical guide to help make those conversations easier and more meaningful – and to come out of them feeling inspired and connected.

How Can We Make Conversations More Prosocial?
resource image
The vast majority of conversations we might have on any given day are not particularly emotionally challenging. These conversations whiz by without us even noticing. But the conversations that are going to trip up a group’s attempts to be prosocial are the ones that include differences of opinion and conflict. How are we to deal with those challenging conversations? Read this supplementary chapter to Prosocial: Using Evolutionary Science to Build Productive, Equitable, and Collaborative Groups.

A Living Room Conversation is an event where people come together in person or online to discuss an issue using a carefully crafted “conversation guide” that fosters connection and understanding. It’s free and really easy to use! Gather 4-6 people to talk about a chosen topic, follow the Conversation Guide and Agreements, answer questions based on experience , not opinion, and walk away with more understanding and connection.

Connect on our EcoCiv online community engagement platform on Hylo.

We are in the process of creating an online EcoCiv community space on Hylo—a prosocial, open-source platform for purpose-driven groups.

In Hylo, we will have a space where you can connect with like-minded change-makers from around the world, letting them know what you have been learning about, what resources and ideas are inspiring you, what you have been doing to contribute to creating a life-affirming planetary civilization, what you are wondering about, and so on. And, you can check out the posts made by others to offer encouragement, get ideas, and make connections.

We will let you know when our Hylo space is up and running.

Ideas and feedback

The resources that you see on these Participation Pathways pages are just a starting place. We are hoping to build these lists out over time, bringing in many more options from around the world. If you have an idea for something that could be added to this list, please join us on Hylo and let us know. We will have a dedicated area for feedback.

The Ecocivilization Coalition is a strategic initiative of the Institute for Ecological Civilization, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
